This sculpture was commissioned by University College Cork following a limited competition as a gift to mark the donation of the Bantry House archives to the Boole Library.
The inspiration for the form comes from the Kilnaruane Pillarstone, an Early Christian relief carving found close the House, which features a rare depiction of a boat sailing on the vertical.
